CEAL@UNC ushers in a new era for the Center for Excellence in Assisted Living, now within a world-renowned research university. CEAL@UNC works with others to develop evidence, bolster the workforce, and promote the adoption of evidence-based practices and policies, all toward advancing the well-being of the people who live and work in assisted living.

Established in 2003 as a result of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging’s Assisted Living Workgroup Report, the national Center for Excellence in Assisted Living (CEAL) is a unique collaborative of diverse organizations working together to promote excellence in AL.
Organizations represent assisted living providers; nurses, physicians, and other clinicians; experts and advocates in Alzheimer’s disease and dementia care; state agencies supporting long-term services and supports; leaders in eldercare transformation; workforce experts transforming quality direct care jobs; and numerous others.

Since 1997, experts at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and national collaborators have become the nation’s leaders in assisted living research.

Research conducted in partnership with assisted living organizations, staff, residents, and their families examines the needs of residents and the staff who provide their care; develops and evaluates quality improvement initiatives; creates tools to guide care and measure outcomes; and studies policies, among other areas.

In 2023, CEAL became CEAL@UNC, which maintains the original national collaborative and has expanded capacity to advance the well-being of the people who live and work in assisted living through research, practice, and policy.

CEAL@UNC is guided by an Advisory Board composed of a unique collaborative of diverse national organizations:
